Predators score important goal in Stanley Cup Final … after refs’ quick whistle

Jun 11, 2017, 7:08 PM | Updated: 7:59 pm

That’s going to hurt.

The Nashville Predators were in a win-or-go-home situation down 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins when they had a nice start on forcing a Game 7. But then, as it tends to go in an important moment of a sporting event, the officials had to butt in.

Early in the second period with a scoreless tie on Sunday, a shot at Penguins goalie Matt Murray slipped under his left pad and squeaked out into the open, allowing the Preds’ Colton Sissons to rebound the puck for an easy goal.

Or not.

A whistle had blown before the score as the officials thought Murray had covered the puck (he hadn’t). By the rules, it’s not reviewable. The whistle had blown, and the play was dead.

The whistled loomed large.

The Penguins’ Patric Hornqvist finally broke the scoreless tie with 1:35 to play in the third period, and Pittsburgh added an insurance goal with 14 seconds left on to take the Stanley Cup Final in six games.

Here’s another angle of the quick whistle.
