D-backs’ A.J. Pollock starts minor league rehab assignment

Jun 18, 2017, 8:08 AM | Updated: 1:29 pm

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock began a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on Saturday with a limited five-inning outing.

The center fielder went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk for the Aces.

Pollock’s potentially-imminent return to the D-backs would be a major boost for the club, even though the team has seemingly gotten by just fine without him; Arizona has been without Pollock since he hit the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain on May 15. Since then, the D-backs are 21-8.

But still, his impact on the team is substantial. Pollock was hitting .299 with 11 RBI and 11 stolen bases as Arizona’s everyday center fielder before going on the shelf last month.

The former All-Star and Gold Glove winner missed almost the entire 2016 season due to injury, but hit .315 in 2015, his most recent full season.

While Pollock and his fellow outfielder Yasmany Tomas (right groin tendinitis) have been on the DL, the D-backs have gotten help from players like Gregor Blanco and Rey Fuentes. The two have hit a combined .253 with two home runs and seven RBI.
