Just over a week after the MLB Draft, the D-backs have signed their first-round pick, Pavin Smith, along with the 68th overall pick, Daulton Varsho.
Smith was signed Tuesday, Varsho was inked Sunday and both players will report to Short-Season A Hillsboro.
The 6-foot-2 first baseman Smith was named a 2017 Golden Spikes semifinalist and selected seventh overall by the D-backs.
In his junior season at Virginia, Smith hit .342 with 77 RBI and 13 home runs while striking out just 12 times.
Varsho was selected with the first pick in the Competitive Balance Round B out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The catcher led the Horizon League his junior year with a .362 average, .643 slugging percentage and a .490 on-base percentage. In his three seasons with the Panthers, he hit 24 home runs, racked up 124 RBI and walked 92 times.
With the signings of both Smith and Varsho, the D-backs have now signed 23 of their 41 picks from the 2017 Draft.
