Well, that escalated quickly.

The Arizona Diamondbacks recorded only a Jake Lamb double through the first three innings against Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeff Hoffman, the 24-year-old who is 4-0 through six games (five starts) this season.

Then the fourth inning happened.

The D-backs jumped all over Hoffman and continued to smack around the Rockies bullpen. They began the top of the fourth trailing 1-0 with Taijuan Walker on the mound and entered the bottom of the inning ahead 10-1.

Here’s how that offensive flexing showed, by the numbers, in the breakout inning of a 16-5 victory at Coors Field.

0

There were zero home runs in the fourth. The D-backs are the first National League team to score double-digit runs in an inning without a home run since the Cardinals plated 12 against the Cubs in 2012. As a road team, no NL squad has scored 10 or more runs without a home run since the Phillies did so in 2005.

1

The 10 runs are first in franchise history for most runs scored in a single inning on the road.

2

It didn’t help the Rockies were putting runners on without much of a fight. After four D-backs hits and two outs into the inning, Colorado walked two batters sandwiching a hit by Walker that scored two runs. The first to Nick Ahmed was intentional but backfired when Arizona’s starting pitcher hit a liner to center that scored the shortstop.

2, Part II

Daniel Descalso wasn’t feeling as good as his teammates during the offensive explosion. He grounded out as the fifth batter for the first Arizona out, then lined out for the third out.

3

Brandon Drury won the inning for Arizona with a single and a double for three RBI.

3, Part II

The 10 runs in a single frame were the third-most in team history. The record: 13 scored in 2010 against the Pirates.

4

Four of the D-backs’ hits in the frame were doubles. All of them — by Lamb, Paul Goldschmidt, Drury and Chris Iannetta — came off Hoffman.

4.29

Hoffman entered Wednesday with a 2.25 ERA. By the end of the fourth, his ERA through 35.2 innings pitched this year sat at 4.29. Hoffman had only eight earned runs in 32 frames prior and left with nine in just 0.2 innings.

9

There were nine total Diamondbacks hits in the fourth inning.

14

Arizona sent 14 batters to the plate in the frame.

14, Part II

It was also the 14th time the D-backs scored five or more runs in an inning this season.
