The Arizona Coyotes traded away the seventh overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft Friday morning, which left them with just one first-round selection.

With that 23rd overall pick, they chose defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

Joseph played for the Charlottetown Islanders as part of the Quebec Major Hockey League.

A 6-foot 2-inch, 161 pound defenseman, Joseph played 75 total games last season for the Islanders.

He recorded 39 points (six goals and 33 assists) in the regular season, while contributing six points (one goal and five assists) in his team’s 13 playoff games.

It was his second season in Charlottetown, where he played 60 total games for the Islanders in 2015-16. He tallied 11 points (two goals and nine assists) that season.

The 17-year-old was born in Chambly, Quebec, Canada.

Coyotes General Manager John Chayka said immediately after they made the pick that the team has gotten “significantly better” with the flurry of moves they’ve made over the last couple of weeks.
