After two injury-capped seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, running back Chris Johnson hopes the third time is the charm. He re-signed with Arizona on Thursday for the 2017 season, reports John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM, Arizona’s Sports Station.

Johnson, 31, joins a crowded running back room led by All-Pro David Johnson, who in 2016, asserted himself as one of the best in the game by compiling 1,239 rushing yards, 879 receiving yards and 20 total touchdowns.

Also competing for a place on the depth chart are Andre Ellington, who moved back to running back after tinkering at wideout, Kerwynn Williams, Elijhaa Penny and rookies T.J. Logan and James Summers.

In 2015, his first year with Arizona, Chris Johnson played in 11 games and rolled up 814 yards at 4.2 yards per carry along with three touchdowns before a tibia fracture ended his year.

Last season, he recorded 95 yards on 25 carries playing behind David Johnson for four games before a sports hernia surgery prematurely wrapped his 2016.

Heading into his 10th NFL season, Chris Johnson sits 463 yards shy of reaching the 10,000-yards rushing mark in his career. Only 29 players have reached that mark.
