D-backs to bat Martinez fifth Wednesday, place Fuentes on DL

To make roster space for recently-acquired outfielder J.D. Martinez, the Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Rey Fuentes on the 10-day disabled list with a left thumb contusion.

The D-backs will debut Martinez in their lineup Wednesday, a day after they acquired him from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for three prospects.

Martinez will bat fifth in the order and behind Paul Goldschmidt against the Cincinnati Reds.

The 29-year-old Martinez is batting .305 with 16 home runs and 39 RBI this season.

Fuentes, in his third MLB season and first with the Diamondbacks, is batting .240 in 41 games played with six RBI and two home runs. He joins outfielder Yasmany Tomas on the 10-day disabled list.
