Marlins 2B Dee Gordon fields grounder, sprints to first to record out

Aug 16, 2017, 12:32 PM

It’s no secret that Miami Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon is fast.

The 29-year-old has 40 stolen bases this season and 192 combined since the beginning of the 2014 season.

Those numbers provide the evidence that he’s quick, but they don’t do his speed as much justice as this clip from Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

With runners on first and second and two outs, Gordon fields a ground ball. In this scenario, 999 times out of 1,000, Gordon would look to first base, see his first baseman Tomas Telis standing on the bag and ready to catch his throw for the final out of the inning.

This time, however, the ball was hit in such an odd way that Telis thought that he had the best chance to field it and left first base open.

Fortunate enough for him, Gordon was both fast enough to reach the ball in the gap and run all the way to first base to tag the bag and beat Giants catcher Nick Hundley.
