Arizona’s Trier dunks on defender, pulls out the Iverson step-over

Aug 16, 2017, 3:28 PM

Excuse Allonzo Trier. He’s got some things to prove.

His Arizona Wildcats continued their tour of Spain on Wednesday, and Trier put together an efficient outing against the Mataro All-Stars by scoring 21 points to go with eight assists and four steals in a win.

But it was this fourth-quarter fastbreak dunk over a helpless defender that capped his solid outing.

Trier not only ran through and jumped over the would-be shot-blocker, but he also followed the and-one by stepping over his helpless defender. It looked a lot like Sixers guard Allen Iverson’s infamous move after drilling a step-back jumper over Lakers backup Tyronn Lue.

On Wednesday, the All-Stars gave the Wildcats a bit more competition in a 99-74 loss than Arizona’s first opponent of its trip, Combinado Valenciano, which fell in a 69-point defeat.

Arizona is a consensus top-five squad heading into 2017-18, and Trier’s return to school is a major reason why.

The junior will be the focal point for the Wildcats, who also have sophomore Rawle Alkins back along with five-star freshman center DeAndre Ayton in the fold.

And Trier has much to prove after missing 19 games last year due to a PED suspension and then struggling to get in a groove with his teammates in the middle of the season before Arizona fell to Xavier in the Sweet 16.

Trier’s dunk Wednesday, not to mention his loaded box score, seems to indicate he’s expanded his game and perhaps is ready to take the Wildcats to the place head coach Sean Miller hasn’t been: the Final Four.
