The Arizona Cardinals had to be fearing the worst and hoping for the best when it came to David Johnson’s wrist.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, they didn’t get good news Tuesday.

The team officially placed Johnson on injured reserve Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson was injured in the third quarter of Arizona’s season-opening loss to the Detroit Lions Sunday. He left the game briefly after taking a hard hit from Glover Quin on a 24-yard catch. Johnson returned on the Cardinals’ next series, but fumbled on the play and left for good after that.

In Johnson’s absence, Arizona will likely rely more heavily on a running back-by-committee, with Kerwynn Williams, Andre Ellington and Elijhaa Penny carrying heavier workloads.

The Cardinals also reportedly will sign former Arizona State star D.J. Foster off of the New England Patriots practice squad.
