Defense. Yes, there was defense.

Kicking. There was some good stuff there as well.

Was a low-scoring game that included 23 penalties for 193 combined yards exclusively because of the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers having great defenses?

That’s not so true. A field-goal fest was also thanks to two NFC West teams whose offenses were struggling, and struggling big-time.

It’d been six years, dating back to Sept. 26, 2011, since two teams combined for nine field goals field goals in an NFL game, according to the FOX broadcast. Arizona and San Francisco found themselves in that position after a very literal back-and-forth for the entire game, starting with Robbie Gould’s 49-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Gould and Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson would take turns scoring three points at a time through the entire game, finding their teams tied, 12-12, heading into overtime. San Francisco would hit the ninth field goal with 2:24 left in the extra period, before Arizona decided to find Larry Fitzgerald for a 19-yard touchdown pass that game his team a 18-15 win.

But to that point, no, people weren’t appreciating the viewing experience.

Should they have? That’s up for debate.

All we know is that there weren’t many takes that involved praises for two stellar defensive units, or Dawson, whose three misses in three weeks leading into the year were a concern.

So, sorry Phil. People aren’t talking about you enough.
