Pro athletes show out with scary and topical Halloween costumes

Oct 31, 2017, 11:43 AM | Updated: 12:44 pm

Halloween isn’t just about being scary.

It’s about being creative. And when pro athletes with a little time and money have the chance to celebrate the special day, good things always happen.

This year featured some costumes that were throwbacks, others that paid tribute to topical pieces of pop culture and some items that were just … weird.

Let’s start with the weird. Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban went with this cowboy-riding-a-pig costume that was neither scary nor topical. But yes, it was good.

Former Diamondbacks shortstop and current New York Yankee Didi Gregorius went all in on the production value. He got an Ant-Man outfit and like the super hero character actually shrunk.

Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James went all in as Pennywise from the horror film “IT” while his teammates went with less scary costumes. J.R. Smith dressed as a Conehead, and Tristan Thompson — and girlfriend Khloe Kardashian — got done up as characters from the HBO series “Game of Thrones.”

Meanwhile, former Suns guard and current Cavalier Isaiah Thomas recreated the most well-known still-shot of NWA rapper Eazy-E, and Arizona Wildcats product and Bulls rookie Lauri Markkanen went as a 7-foot-1, hot-shooting “Cat in the Hat.”

As for attention to detail, few can beat Thunder players Russell Westbrook and Nick Collison, who recreated several images of characters from the movie “White Men Can’t Jump.”
