Vinny & Skinny: Cardinals need to help quarterback Drew Stanton

Nov 2, 2017, 11:50 AM | Updated: 11:55 am

Yes, Drew Stanton will start at quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals against the San Francisco 49ers.

No, it won’t be all on him if the game doesn’t go as planned.

In the Week 9 edition of Vinny & Skinny presented by Arizona Central Credit Union, Vince Marotta and Mike Jurecki tackle just what coach Bruce Arians’ team must do to win a game against the winless Niners this Sunday.

“They’re going to have to run the ball,” Jurecki said. “And they got to get better field position, and that means specials teams and defense are going to have to do their part.

“For the most part, (Stanton has) been familiar with the offense, and Arians is confident in him. This is another winnable game for the Cardinals.”

Case in point: In Stanton’s last two starts against the 49ers, he threw four touchdowns with no interceptions. And as a starter for the Cardinals, he owns a 6-3 record.

The Cardinals must provide help. Adrian Peterson will need to get more involved on the ground and even act as a “safety net” in the passing game to help Stanton get out of trouble.

The defense, of course, could use a few more big plays. That might be possible with the 49ers running out rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Every week, Vinny & Skinny will break down the Arizona Cardinals’ previous game and look ahead at their upcoming matchup.
