The use of themed uniforms has become more popular in minor league sports.
While some teams often share the same themed night relating to famous movies or eras, the Springfield Thunderbirds went for the home run.
Based in Springfield, Mass., the American Hockey League affiliate to the NHL’s Florida Panthers debuted new David Ortiz inspired jerseys on Thursday.
The jerseys will be worn on “David Ortiz Night” on Nov. 11 to honor the Red Sox great who retired after the 2016 season after 14 years in Boston. 40-year-old Ortiz will be in attendance, according to the team website.
The jerseys feature some of the same detail as the Boston Red Sox home jersey. A primary white color with red lining down the torso and printed images of buttons to replicate the famous look. Written across the middle of the chest in the same lettering found on the Red Sox jersey is “T-BIRDS.”
On the left sleeve, the Thunderbirds primary logo with Big Papi’s No. 34 on the right.
Tickets are sold out, and for good reason. Fans will have the opportunity to take pictures with not only Ortiz, but also the Red Sox 2013 World Series Trophy.
