Join us for a special “live” broadcast of The Power MMA Show this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Devil’s Advocate on 955 E. University Dr. in Tempe. Our guys Aaron Simpson and Ryan Bader will be joined by their friends and fellow former ASU All-American wrestlers turned UFC stars CB Dollaway and UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez for an autograph and picture session to benefit the Sun Devils wrestling program.
Dollaway(middleweight), Bader (light heavyweight) and Velasquez (heavyweight) anchored the Sun Devils wrestling lineup in the mid 2000s, with Simpson (who had 110 career wins at ASU from 1995-98) coaching them. UFC fighters John Moraga (2-0) and Clifford Starks (1-1) were also on that team.
Velasquez (11-1) is coming off his dominating December 29 victory over Junior dos Santos, in which he battered the Brazilian for five rounds and took back the championship belt he had previously held for over a year after destroying Brock Lesnar in October 2010. He also won two state championships at Yuma High School.
Bader (15-3) set the record for fastest submission win in UFC light heavyweight history at UFC on FOX 6 Jan. 26, forcing Vladimir Matyushenko to tap for the first time in his career in an incredible 50 seconds to earn the “submission of the night” bonus.
Dollaway (13-4) is also coming off a big victory of his own, having defeated Brazilian Daniel Sarafian in his hometown of Sao Poalo at UFC on FX on January 19. Dollaway’s efforts earned him the UFC’s coveted “Fight of the Night” bonus and gave him a two-fight win streak.
Simpson, 12-4 in his MMA career, left ASU as the all-time record holder with 110 career wins. He won four state championships at Antelope Union HS near Yuma. He currently serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the Sun Devil wrestling program.
Simpson, Bader and Dollaway are each part-owners and co-founders of the thriving Power MMA and Fitness gym in Gilbert, headquarters of their Team Power fight team. Velasquez trains at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in Northern California.
The Sun Devil wrestling program is famous for producing great MMA fighters, including Dan “Hendo” Henderson, one of the top light heavyweights in the UFC. Henderson will be co-headlining UFC 157 in Anaheim later this month. Also stepping from the mats in Tempe into the cages all over the world were MMA legends “Cowboy” Don Frye and Dan “The Beast” Severn, two of the best and most well-known fighters of the sport’s early years.
