May Day Showtime PPV Recap
May 7, 2013, 5:56 AM
It was May Day in Las Vegas last weekend with Floyd Mayweather fighting for the first time since his victory over Miguel Cotto on May 5th last year.
Mayweather faced Gilroy, California’s Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on Showtime pay-per-view. Mayweather dominated the fight, as expected, scoring a unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the fight 117-111.
On the undercard, J’Leon Love defeated Gabriel Rosado via split decision, winning the NABF Middleweight Title. The cards were read amid boos from the crowd, as most felt that Rosado had done enough to secure the victory. Always colorful in his post-fight interviews, Rosado stated, “We all know who won the fight,” while expressing his respect for Love, and noting the fact that both lost close family members just prior to the fight. The judges scored the bout 97-92, 95-94 and 94-95.
Leo Santa Cruz dominated the overmatched Alexander Munoz, scoring a fifth round knock-out, and winning the vacant USBA Super Bantamweight Title. Abner Mares improved his record to 26-0 and secured the WBC Featherweight belt after what many felt was an early stoppage in the ninth round over the durable Ponce De Leon. After the second knock-down in the fight, Mares was pummeling a hurt but responsive De Leon on the ropes, leading referee Jay Nady to stop the contest.
Pay-per-view numbers are expected to top one million buys, reaffirming Mayweather’s dominance in the PPV Boxing arena. He expects to fight again September 14, 2013, versus an as-yet-unnamed opponent. He did injure his right hand versus Guerrero, but he said it won’t stop him from fighting in the fall.
