Mauricio Zingano dead at age 37

Mauricio Zingano, husband of current UFC women’s bantamweight contender Cat Zingano, passed away Monday night at the age of 37.

While the coroner’s office has not released the official cause of death, reports from Brazilian media outlet Globo, reveal the 37-year-old took his own life.

As respected member of mixed martial arts community, Zingano owned and operated the popular Zingao BJJ training facility in Colorado. During his time as a professional fighter he compiled a record of 2-0-1 before turning his attention to running his gym full-time.

Mauricio and Cat married in 2010 and they have one son

Under his tutelage, his wife rose to prominence in the 135-pound division with a 7-0 record that culminated with a third-round TKO victory over Miesha Tate at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. With this victory, Cat earned herself a UFC title shot and the role as head coach opposite Ronda Rousey on TUF 18.

But after suffering a torn ACL during practice, Cat was forced to withdraw from both opportunities.

She released her first statement following the tragedy via her management as reported by MMATorch.com

Late yesterday evening I learned that my husband and soul mate of seven years, Mauricio Zingano, has passed away.

My life has changed irrevocably. I am shocked and deeply saddened. Thankfully, my family and friends are coming together to provide the support I need. I am grateful for them, as I know there are many difficult days ahead.

I also very much appreciate the outpour of support from the jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts world. My husband was well known and respected in this close-knit community and I know he would appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers, as do I.

At this time, I respectfully ask everyone to give me privacy as I gather with relatives and friends. Again, I give thanks to all for the kind words and support.
