Tyron Woodley replaces injured Hector Lombard against Dong Hyun Kim at UFC Fight Night 48

Just a little over a week ago UFC welterweight Tyron Woodley suffered the most lopsided defeat of his career at the hands of Rory MacDonald at UFC 174. But now the American Top Team product gets a golden opportunity to not only erase this image from the minds of the fans but he will also throw his name right back into the title picture.

On Tuesday UFC President Dana White announced Woodley (13-3) has agreed to replace the injured Hector Lombard (34-4-1) against Dong Hyun Kim (19-2-1) in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 48.

Woodley, currently the number six ranked welterweight according to the official Power MMA rankings, won three of his first four fights in the UFC, which included stoppage victories over Jay Hieron, Josh Koscheck and Carlos Condit. His only loss came in the form of a controversial split decision against Jake Shields at UFC 161 last summer.

Kim, currently unranked, is riding an impressive four fight-winning streak under the UFC banner. His most recent victory earned him “Performance of the Night” after the Korean landed a violent spinning back elbow knockout to the skull of John Hathaway in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter China Finale. Prior to this win Kim picked up his first Knockout of the Night bonus following a come-from-behind victory over Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 29.

Lombard, the number eight-ranked welterweight, was coming off a unanimous decision victory over Shields at UFC 171. Prior to this win, the former Bellator middleweight champion earned a knockout victory over former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nate Marquardt at UFC 166.

UFC Fight Night 48 is set to take place on Aug. 23 at the CotaiArena in Macao, China. A middleweight matchup between Michael Bisping (24-6) and Cung Le (9-2) will serve as the night’s main event. The entire card is expected to air on UFC Fight Pass.
