Former Suns Marion, Ceballos team up on ‘The Amazing Race’

Phoenix Suns fans who don’t already watch “The Amazing Race” might want to tune in when the CBS show’s season premiere drops Jan. 3.

Former Phoenix Suns Cedric Ceballos and Shawn Marion will form Team Slam Dunk, squaring off against the competition in Season 30 of the show.

“The Amazing Race” follows teams of two people who speed around the world attempting to arrive at pit stops ahead of their opponents by achieving tasks and using clues to their advantage.

“Shawn is quick, very witty,” Ceballos said in a promo video released Thursday. “He has the ability to adapt to many situations. He can be a fool and he can also be super intelligent and figure things out quickly, so I think he’s going to be an asset.”

Ceballos, Marion said, will be the “calm and steady guy.”

The Suns drafted Ceballos 48th overall in the 1990 draft, and he played for them from 1990-94 and again from 1997-98.

Marion was the ninth overall pick by Phoenix in 1999 and played for the team until 2008. He ranks in the top-five in franchise history of total points, minutes, rebounds, blocks, steals and three-pointers made.

The two are obviously competitive, but they’re also driven to win because of the pressure put on them by their NBA family.

“We have a ton of relationships with the fraternity of NBA players,” Ceballos said, “and I think the biggest thing is they want us to prove to everyone else we can do it — we can do other things besides playing basketball.”

Their opponents include teams of competitive eaters, reality stars, business people, models and two local Arizonans who operate a goat yoga business.
