There were three freshmen in the state of Arizona who exceeded expectations in their first year of college football.
Arizona State cornerback Chase Lucas, Arizona pass rusher Kylan Wilborn and linebacker Colin Schooler were named to USA TODAY’s freshman All-American team.
Known for his athleticism and versatility in high school playing with N’Keal Harry at Chandler High School, Lucas is one of the best young defensive backs in the Pac-12.
Lucas turned heads during the offseason and delivered during the fall, making 53 tackles and pulling down two interceptions to become the only freshman to earn first- or second-team all-conference honors in the Pac-12.
The combination of Wilborn and Schooler give Arizona Wildcat fans optimism surrounding Rich Rodriguez’s defense for the next two years.
The pass rusher Wilborn is known for getting to the quarterback while Schooler contains the run. Both were rated only three-star recruits.
The first of two Arizona defenders on this team, Wilborn’s freshman year was highlighted by a four-sack performance in the Wildcats’ 47-30 win against UCLA in October.
Schooler posted 13.5 tackles for loss, all coming in Pac-12 Conference play, to be the only freshman to rank in the nation’s top 100 in the category.
