ESPN analyst refers to Iowa State as ‘Hawkeyes’ during bowl game

Dec 30, 2017, 3:08 PM | Updated: 4:09 pm

In the latest case of mistaken identity, Tommy Tuberville is the culprit.

During the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, where the Iowa State CYCLONES took down the Memphis Tigers 21-20, Tuberville was caught on broadcast referring to the Cyclones as the Hawkeyes — University of Iowa’s mascot, not Iowa State’s.

“Iowa State’s got the ball, two minutes to go into the wind. They will have the wind in the fourth quarter, which is going to be a big advantage for the Hawkeyes,” Tuberville said.

After a few seconds of dead air, he came back with “Cyclones, excuse me.”

Did we mention that he used to coach in the Big 12?

And while Tuberville may never hear the end of his blunder — especially from Iowa State fans — he isn’t the only one to get it wrong.

Remember Ronde Barber’s mix up of Karlos Dansby or Kendall Fuller?

We do too.
