Arizona State football added yet another name to the list of coaches on Herm Edwards’ new coaching staff on Friday when it announced Tony White would join the program as a cornerbacks coach and defensive passing game coordinator.

White has spent the last eight seasons at San Diego State University, where ASU’s new defensive coordinator — Danny Gonzales — held the same position last season.

Last season, defensive backs were coached by T.J. Rushing, who left the Sun Devils this offseason to join former ASU offensive coordinator Mike Norvell, who is now the head coach at Memphis.

White has been named the Mountain West Recruiter of the Year by Scout.com twice, a press release from the school said.

“Tony White is a proven recruiter at the national level and someone who has fielded an elite secondary just about every year during his tenure at San Diego State,” Edwards said via the release. “Tony’s area of expertise is the Los Angeles area and he will provide us a much-needed presence in that important area in addition to what we expect to be the continued development of our secondary.”

SDSU was 11th in the nation and first in the Mountain West Conference in total defense last year. The Aztecs were 15th in passing yards allowed.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to be at a great institution like Arizona State,” White said. “Anytime you get a chance to be around great people and to be around the support like there is at ASU, it’s going to be an exciting opportunity. I look forward to working with Coach Edwards and his staff in order to bring a championship to Sun Devil Nation.”
