Burns: Fell into the Cardinals lap

Make no mistake; that wasn’t skill the Cardinals employed on Saturday in taking Beanie Wells.

That was sheer luck.

I don’t think any of us, even in our most mocked mock draft would have thought the Ohio State star would be there at #31. Yet there he was, the most intriguing player in the draft filling the Cardinals most glaring need.

It’s almost impossible not to love the fact that Beanie Wells is now a Cardinal. A high risk/high reward player, with virtually no risk. The ultimate boom or bust, but even if he busts, so what? He was a low first round pick. The costs are minimal.

Hopefully Wells was humbled by his draft day slide. Hopefully his history of injuries, questions about his toughness and suggestions he was coddled in Columbus will fade on a team that won without him, but needs him badly.

In Columbus he was “The Man.” In Arizona, he’s the fourth most popular player…..on the offense.

The Arizona Cardinals deserve a participation trophy

Give credit to Arizona Cardinals GM Steve Keim for one thing -- he's always trying to improve the roster.

A Corolla at running back might work for the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals might be better off looking for a running back in the draft than to land the big name.

And two years from now he might very well be sounding that alarm high above the University of Phoenix crowd before a Cardinals home game.
