Saints whiff on tackle, Vikings score impossible game-winning TD

Jan 14, 2018, 6:43 PM

Here’s the setup for the most improbable ending to an NFL playoff game in recent memory: With a field goal, the New Orleans Saints took a 24-23 lead on the Minnesota Vikings, and just 25 seconds remained in the game.

Minnesota took a touchback and advanced to its own 39-yard line with about 10 seconds left. On 3rd-and-10, With quarterback Case Keenum giving it one last heave, a strike to Stefon Diggs didn’t look like it would matter. With a defender bearing down on him, Diggs leapt to make the grab.

But Saints defensive back Marcus Williams went flying by Diggs without making any sort of contact, and Diggs spun around with nothing but turf in front of him.

Diggs took it 61 yards to the house, and with 0:00 on the game clock, the Vikings realized they’d advanced to face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game next week.

Let’s just say Saints fans weren’t pleased with Williams’ single, very important play — or lack of a play.

The Vikings, on the other hand, were living it up.
