Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden reportedly interviewed now-Arizona head coach Kevin Sumlin for the Raiders’ offensive coordinator job, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday.
Instead of taking the Raiders job, Sumlin headed down south, taking the Arizona head coaching position. He was officially announced as the Wildcats head coach on Jan. 14, finalizing Arizona’s coaching search after firing Rich Rodriguez over allegations of misconduct 11 days prior.
Sumlin holds an 86-43 record as a college head coach at Houston and, most recently, Texas A&M.
He takes over an Arizona offense that led the Pac-12 with 71 touchdowns and 4,021 yards on the ground in 2017.
If Sumlin would have taken the Raiders job, it would have marked his first time coaching in the NFL.
