Hey Cuban, quit eyeing our Griner!

Apr 3, 2013, 7:23 PM | Updated: 7:58 pm

Brittney Griner of Baylor University is the most unique prospect in women’s basketball in over a decade.

She stands 6-foot-8, and is equally proficient on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Don’t believe us? She’s the all-time NCAA leader in blocked shots and is the second-leading scorer in women’s college hoops history. We told you so.

Anyway, the Phoenix Mercury own the first overall pick in this year’s WNBA Draft, and despite the depth of talent available in this year’s class, they’re expected to take Griner with their selection.

Of course, something could change their plan — like Griner playing in the NBA!

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban told ESPN Dallas that he’s thought about using a second round draft pick to select Griner, and if that doesn’t happen, he’d be more than willing to invite her to compete for a roster spot on the Mavs’ Summer League team.

“If she is the best on the board, I will take her,” Cuban said Tuesday night. “I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.”

No woman has ever been drafted by an NBA team, although Ann Meyers-Drysdale did sign a contract with the Indiana Pacers in 1980. Meyers-Drysdale, incidentally, is currently the vice president of the Mercury.

C’mon Mark, isn’t it enough that you’ve got your cute little “Apprentice” knock-off on ABC? You’ve got to impede the Mercury’s progress too?
