Country music singer-songwriter Blake Shelton loves him some Arizona Cardinals football.
A friend of recently-retired head coach Bruce Arians, Shelton is using his platform to help his favorite team. He got in some free agency recruiting work Sunday before the Super Bowl.
Promoting the upcoming season of “The Voice,” the television series he co-hosts, Shelton pitched Arizona as a landing spot to potential free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins.
“I want to say to Kirk Cousins, if he’s watching out there, we want you in Arizona,” Shelton said. “We want you to be the quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.
“I’m calling it right now. We’ll be in this game next year with Larry Fitzgerald, David Johnson, Patrick Peterson. Come on, Kirk Cousins. Do it! Also watch ‘The Voice’!”
Shelton joins a list of Cardinals players who have already publicly pitched Cousins on considering Arizona as a free agent destination.
With the Washington Redskins recently agreeing to trade for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, it appears they will allow Cousins to enter free agency.
There’s also a chance the Redskins franchise tag Cousins in order to get assets back in a trade.
But should Cousins hit the free agency market, Arizona is an obvious landing spot — though the Cardinals would find themselves without much financial flexibility moving forward should they sign the quarterback to, likely, the biggest contract in NFL history.
The Cardinals and general manager Steve Keim are tasked this offseason with filling a quarterback room vacated by the retired Carson Palmer and free agents Drew Stanton, Blaine Gabbert and Matt Barkley.
