The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation chose 30 Arizona schools to win the “D-Backs $150,000 School Challenge.” The challenge funds projects from physical school improvements to new educational programs with a $5,000 grant.
Tempe High School’s United Sound band program was one of of those 30 lucky selections. Tempe Union High School District describes the program as a “unique program provides musical performance experiences to students who might not otherwise experience them teaming up band members with special needs students to learn notes, rhythm and how to play musical instruments.”
The Diamondbacks, D. Baxter and starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo visited the band’s classroom and presented them with a check for $5,000. Arroyo gave them something else as well — a mini concert.
Arroyo, an avid guitar player and music lover, sang a song he wrote called “Be You” to the students.
