The Phoenix Suns acquired point guard Elfrid Payton from the Orlando Magic just before the end of the NBA trade deadline on Thursday.
Just two days later, Payton made his first start against the Denver Nuggets. Despite the 123-113 loss, he contributed for the Suns in a big way.
Payton was acquired due to the injuries to Tyler Ulis, Devin Booker and Isaiah Canaan, who was waived Thursday to make room on the roster.
Despite not going through a single practice before suiting up, Payton showed great vision and chemistry with teammates from the opening moments of the game.

Payton also made an impact on the offensive end of the court for the Suns, using his speed to find his way to the rim on numerous occasions.
He averaged 13.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game with the Magic, shooting 52 percent from the field.
On this night, the 23-year-old was one assist away from a double-double, finishing with 19 points, nine assists. He shot 61.5% from the field.
This shows all of Payton’s scoring prowess. Watch how quickly he goes behind the back to reset the play. Then, he sees the angle, doesn’t wait and pushes it. Goes under rim for protection. pic.twitter.com/M6YNmrp7Dp

Overall, it was a solid performance for a point guard who could potentially be the long-term option the Suns are looking for.
