Notre Dame Prep's Sarah Eversman teed off Monday with three players who finished in the top five at last year's Division II state girls golf tournament. Eversman, who tied for 13th last year, was not intimidated.
Eversman shot the lone under-par round of the day Monday — 71 — to nab the first-round lead of the tournament at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen. Eversman, a senior, was 1-over par at the turn, but birdied three holes on the back nine heading to 18. She bogeyed 18 to finish with a one-shot lead over Verrado's Kaylee Benton anda two-shot edge over Cactus Shadows Abbie Cantwell.
Two-time defending champ Krystal Quihuis of Salpointe struggled on the back nine. Quihuis shot 77, six shots off Eversman's pace. Quihuis double-bogeyed No. 12 and was 4-over par on the back nine. Rounding out the top four are Sahuaro's Desiree Hong (+4) and Canyon del Oro's Morgan Messick (+4).
With Eversman leading the way, Notre Dame has an 8-stroke lead over two-time defending champ Salpointe. Notre Dame's total is 317, Salpointe (325) and Sahuaro (326) is third. Tee times for Tuesday's final round begin at 8 a.m.
