Cory Kasperson and Zach Wolf jump started Valley Christian to a fast start ande the Trojans were steady throughout in knocking off Cortez, 64-53, in the Division III boys state title game at Jobing.com Arena.
Kapserson scored a game-high 24 points, including five 3s to lead Valley Christian to its fifth boys hoops state title. Wolf added 12 points and TJ Widner chipped in 12. Valley Christian and Cortez had split two games previously this season.
Valley Christian produced a pair of hot streaks that rode them to a 35-29 lead at halftime. Valley Christian opened the game with a 9-0 run, saw that lead evaporate and eventually become a 23-21 deficit in the second quarter. A 14-2 burst over a four-minute span bumped the lead to 35-23. Cortez got late 3s in the half from Petrit Haliti and Avery Smith to cut the margin to single digits.
Valley took a 47-40 lead to the final period and put the game away with back-to-back three-point plays by Wolf and Widner to begin the final stanza. Cortez got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Davon MacBeth scored 14 points to lead Cortez and teammate Avery Smith added 13 before fouling out late. MacBeth sank four 3s in the game.
