D-I softball: Red Mountain, SDO go shutout-route to advance

Bre Macha pitched a three-hitter and homered as defending champion and No. 2 Red Mountain defeated top-seed Gilbert, 4-0,  in a Division I softball tournament elimination game at  Rosse Mofford Softball Complex.

Red Mountain snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Ashley Hill and Lindsey Steverson collected RBI in the fourth and fifth. Macha cranked her home run in the sixth to complete the scoring. Red Mountain faces Sandra Day O'Connor Wednesday (May 14) at 6:30 p.m. in an elimination game at Rose Mofford. Tournament unbeatens No. 7 Chaparral and No. 4 Mountain Ridge also play Wednesday at 6:30 at Rose Mofford.

SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR 1, HAMILTON: A day after giving up 13 runs, the No. 3 Lady Eagles got shutout pitching from Emma Vesely to upend and eliminate the No. 6 Lady Huskies. Vesely scattered eight hits — all singles. The game's only run scored in the fifth inning. SDO's Steve McLemore doubled and came home on the second of two Teresa Griego singles. Hamilton got two hits apiece from Kim Slaughter and Sam Reynolds.
