Pusch Ridge’s Frithsen leads South to D-IV baseball victory

Jacob Frithsen only threw seven pitches in the first inning to get three outs and singled in the first run of the game on the first pitch he saw.

That was the beginning of a nice way to end his high school career as the Pusch Ridge's pitcher-third baseman notched most valuable player honors with a solid all-around game Satruday aftrernoon leading the South to a 14-6 victory over the North in the Division IV Arizona Baseball Coaches Association all-star game at Surprise Stadium.

Frithsen's single in the first started a four-run, first-inning rally. He finished a three-inning stint on the mound, allowing three hits and fanning two. He gave up one run (unearned) and picked up the win. The South outhit the North, 15-5, but kept the North in the game with less than spectacular defense. The South committed five errors and all six North runs were unearned. Frithsen was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

The South led 6-0 after two innings and led 9-1 after five. San Manuel's Anthony Garcia and Pusch Ridge's Mike Doty tossed three innings each after Frithsen and gave up one hit each. Garcia allowed no runs and Doty's wildness and four errors during his stint gave up five. Doty walked five and struck out five.

Tempe Prep's Hayden Hurden was the lone North player with two hits — both singles. Tombstone's Chris Gonzales had two hits and scored twice in the first two innings for the South.
