For the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Ski-U-Mah and row the boat are mantras that can be seen or heard just about anywhere around the program.
On Wednesday, football uniforms were added to that list when the the team’s newest look was revealed.
As part of the collection, Minnesota has three jerseys (white, maroon and anthracite jerseys), four pairs of pants (white, maroon, gold and anthracite) and three helmets (white, maroon, gold). In its entirety, there are over 100 combinations for the Golden Gophers to choose from.
Row the boat, a trademarked saying by head coach P.J. Fleck, is a slogan that places emphasis on looking back and moving forward. Ski-U-Mah goes deeper into the school history. It is a traditional school cheer that was created in the late 19th century.
Channeling both mantras, a pattern of a boat, oar and compass has been embedded into the numbers of each jersey as well as the collar. Additionally, the helmets feature an oar as the center stripe and a compass on the back with a player’s number inside of it just above the Ski-U-Mah cheer.
The release is being called Minnesota’s HYPRR ELITE uniforms, playing off Nike’s Hyper Elite lines as well as based off a culture set by Fleck. It stands for “how yours process result response.”
Minnesota will make its first appearance in its new uniforms on Aug. 30 against New Mexico State.
