Alvin Gentry talks Bible, miracles in reference to Phoenix Suns season

As an NBA team you know things have gone horribly wrong when your coach is referencing the Bible and miracles with 10 games remaining in the season. That’s just what Phoenix Suns head coach Alvin Gentry did on Monday while talking to the media about his team’s playoff possibilities.

“We’re not mathematically eliminated but it would take a miracle for us to make the playoffs.”

Cue the scene in Dumb and Dumber; “Mary: I’d say more like… one out of a million.
Lloyd: So you’re telling me there’s a chance. Yeah!”.

Although Gentry doesn’t seem to have much faith left in his team’s chances, he does have faith in another form. He referenced the Bible in trying to explain what his team’s gone through to this season.

“I told [the players] it’s almost being tested very similar to Job in the Bible,” he said. “It’s one of those years we’re just being tested and things haven’t gone our way.”

That is quite the understatement. Being tested is going through a few extended losing streaks over the course of a season (see the Miami Heat). What the Suns have gone through after making the Western Conference Finals, to keep the Biblical references going, is closer to the end of times. Those ‘times’ being one where the team is truly competitive.

While things may seem dark, Gentry provides fans with a glimmer of hope … for next season.

“I don’t know if [Robert Sarver] can sit through a rebuilding situation where you bottom out and five or six years later you’re good again,” Gentry joked. “As a coach I don’t trust that kind of rebuilding situation either.”

And fans in this town won’t trust a five-year rebuilding process either. That is unless the franchise plans on keeping Steve Nash as the face of the franchise well into his 40s and even that isn’t a slam dunk to keep fans in the seat.
