Yasmany Tomas was optioned to Triple-A Reno by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday morning, reducing the roster to 33 players.
The Cuban outfielder/third baseman signed a six-year, $68-million dollar contract with the Diamondbacks in 2014 and was the highest-paid position player on the roster. He was batting .293 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored through 2018 spring training.
A career .268 hitter in the big leagues, this will be the first season Tomas starts a year in the minors since his rookie year in 2015 when he played the first five games of the season in Reno. Tomas has 28 career at-bats in the minor leagues including 2 home runs and a .214 batting average.
In Cuba, Tomas was a .290 hitter and bashed 39 home runs in 272 games. His career relative defensive runs saved is -36.
The Diamondbacks are hoping Tomas can retool his game in Reno as the club looks for outfield options to replace the departed J.D. Martinez and injured Steven Souza Jr.
