Accountant helps Blackhawks hold off Jets…yes, you read that right

Mar 30, 2018, 7:51 AM | Updated: 10:18 am

Many people have sat at their desks during the workday fantasizing about being a professional athlete.

For Chicago accountant Scott Foster, that daydreaming turned into a reality Thursday night.

Foster, 36, plays rec league hockey when he’s not crunching numbers. Blackhawks goalie Anton Forsberg suffered a season-ending injury in pregame, necessitating Chicago “employing the services” of Foster. Normally, for an emergency signing, those duties include wearing the uniform and a baseball cap and sitting on the end of the bench to satisfy NHL roster regulations.

But when Collin Delia, the Blackhawks’ other goalie went down in the third period with cramping (in his first NHL game, no less), Foster actually got called on to play. Armed with a four-goal lead, the accountant would have to patrol the net for over 14 minutes. And wouldn’t you know it? He did.

The Winnipeg Jets got seven shots on Foster and he stopped them all, giving Chicago a 6-2 win at the United Center.

“The initial shock happened when I had to dress,” Foster told the media. “And then, I think you just kind of black out after that.”

Foster has been on Chicago’s emergency goalie roster for much of the season, but usually would take in games from the press box.

Thursday was much different. It’s not every day 21,000 hockey fans start chanting the name of an accountant.

“This is something that no one can ever take away from me,” Foster said. “This is something I can go home and tell my kids and they can tell their friends.

“It was just a ton of fun. A lot of good memories.”
