No matter what Amar’e says, Suns wouldn’t have won title

You knew once Amar’e Stoudemire opened his mouth and suggested if the Phoenix Suns had kept him they may have won the title this year instead of Dallas that it was only a matter of time before someone would take issue with the notion.

Enter, Dave Burns of Sports 620 KTAR’s Sports Interactive.

“Don’t you think the Mavs are a better team now than the Suns were a year ago?,” Burns wondered. “Don’t you think the Mavs are better constructed than the Suns were a year ago even with Amar’e Stoudemire on the roster? That team floated in mediocrity for four months before they finally found their stride. Were they really better than the Dallas Mavericks are? I don’t think they were.”

It’s not that the host never thinks about what may have been, he just thinks Amar’e didn’t take it far enough.

“You can certainly wonder what if, but what if three years from now Amar’e’s eye is shot and his knee is hurt, he can’t play and that contract doesn’t pay for itself?,” he asked. “That’s an equally big question mark. If you want to play the ‘what if’ game let’s play it but let’s play it all the way.”

But what if the 2009-10 rendition of the Suns did faceoff against this year’s Mavericks, what would have happened?

“The Suns didn’t win their championship the Mavs did,” Burns said. “If you ask me who wins head-to-head, the Suns from last year or the Mavs from this year, the Mavs win because the Mavs won.”

The truth is Amar’e is in New York and the Suns championship hopes are in the past. No matter how many times Amar’e or anyone else plays the ‘what if’ game, the Larry O’Brien trophy unfortunately won’t be calling US Airways Center home this summer.
