Tristan Thompson is an athletic power forward standing 6-8 who, in just one year at the University of Texas proved to be a top prospect. What makes Thompson unique was the rapid development he showed on defense in one year, his offense is not far behind. Physically he is ready for the NBA, he may appear a little slight, but his length and wiry frame are to his advantage.
Right now Thompson is the best offensive rebounder in this class and could even be comparable to the best in the NBA. His 7-2 wingspan allows him to block shots from the weak side or in defensive rotations. On defense Thompson makes plays, he plays with great energy and his motor seemingly never stops. The offensive side of his game is not as polished, he is a quality ball-handler and can make mid-range shots, but overall his offensive needs to be facilitated to him.
Down the road, Thompson has the ability to be a much better version of Taj Gibson (Chicago) as a great rebounder and defender. The difference between Thompson and Gibson is that we may see a lot more offense down the road from Thompson, especially in the current structure of the Suns. Thompson has star potential, with the Suns rebuilding – but not really rebuilding – he may be the perfect going forward.
