Suns lacking strong offense, playmakers

Jan 27, 2012, 1:38 AM | Updated: 1:55 am

The 6-11 Suns have yet to catch a break this season and changes will not come easy.

They’ve struggled to find consistent success as their longest winning streak has been only two games, and their rankings are getting lower.

The Suns are 19th in the league in points and 22nd in rebounds per game and are tied for fourth in the Pacific Division. A source of the problem is the lack of playmakers.

“We don’t really have a great offensive lineup,” Nash said. “We’ve had our moments but consistently we haven’t been able to rely on our cohesion and understanding to create an offense for us because we don’t have a go-to guy or a lot of playmakers on the team.”

The team is averaging only .448 percent per game and the 3-point percentage average is .334. The Suns rely heavily on veterans Steve Nash and Grant Hill to get the offense going, but both are taking more breaks because of injuries early in the season. The depth of the team isn’t strong when Nash, Grant or Marcin Gortat are out of the game.

“We’re a team in transition,” Nash said. “We don’t have a complete roster, so we can’t expect to be in the top, but we can expect to improve.”

The Suns are staying positive and head coach Alvin Gentry is making sure he does his job of making his team better.

“If I get the maximum effort that I’m supposed to get out of these guys, and if they play and execute like we’re supposed to, then I’ll take the results,” Gentry said. “But I’m not going to sit here and whine about what we don’t have because that does us zero good.”
