Suns not done with Nash this summer?

Jan 30, 2012, 9:41 PM | Updated: 10:17 pm

Steve Nash’s contract is set to run out at the end of the
2011-12 season, and it has generally been assumed he’ll
leave the Suns for a team that is closer to winning an NBA
championship.

That may not be the case.

According to HoopsWorld.com, the Suns may actually be
looking to sign Nash to a contract extension, keeping him
in the Valley for a few more seasons.

Suns fans are worried that the team may lose a future hall
of famer to free agency, but sources close to the
situation say the Suns may be willing to do a new deal
with Nash this summer in the $8 to $10 million range to
insure Steve stays in Phoenix and that kind of money may
be more than anyone else in free agency would or could pay
for Nash.

The idea of the team re-signing Nash is likely to elicit a
great mix of reactions, because while few actually want to
see Nash play in another uniform, many understand that
there is little chance the team will be ready to contend
anytime soon. And, at 37, Nash can’t have that many
more good years left. Right?

The good news (depending on how you look at it) is that
there is plenty of time between now and the March 15 trade
deadline, and even more time before Nash officially
becomes a free agent.

So, whether or not the Suns will keep Nash for the rest of
this season — and a few after — will not be determined
for quite some time.
