Nash breaks record while playing in pain

Feb 2, 2012, 11:32 PM | Updated: 11:51 pm

Steve Nash had another historic game Wednesday, surpassing
Kevin Johnson to become the Suns’ all-time leader in
assists.

The game against New Orleans was Nash’s first night back
since injuring his left thigh during a game against
Memphis on Saturday. He was able to score 30 points while
posting 10 assists, bumping his record with the Suns up to
6,522. KJ finished his career with 6,518.

“He played extremely well, and to be honest with you guys,
he’s probably about 70 percent,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry
told Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo. “He had more
ice on him after the game than you would find in a cooler.
But that’s just the kind of guy that he is, and he went
out, and he did a great job.”

Nash played 29 minutes against the Hornets. He already
suffered a thigh injury at the beginning of the season,
and he is continually bothered by a sore back. Even though
the 37-year-old is constantly battling injuries, he is the
last person to show how much pain he is really in.

“He won’t ever say anything about it, but he’s playing in
a lot of pain,” Gentry said. “And there are a lot of
things going on that the normal guy I don’t think would be
playing.”
