MLB mock drafts: D-backs looking at position players at No. 25

The 2018 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft begins Monday afternoon.

The Diamondbacks hold the No. 25 selection in this year’s draft. This will be the second draft with general manager Mike Hazen in charge.

CBSSports’ Mike Axsia and MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis believe the D-backs will take a position player with their first round pick, but are divided on who to select.

Jordan Groshans, 3B, Magnolia High School (Texas)

Groshans stands at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds with great defensive tools, according to Perfect Game USA. At the plate, Groshans has strong pull side power from the right side, featuring loose and quick hands. Groshans played shortstop in high school and believes he can stay there long term, but most scouts believe his future is as a third baseman.

Trevor Larnach, OF, Oregon State

Larnach has hit well throughout college, but broke out during his junior season with the Beavers hitting .330 with 17 home runs. His bat is his biggest strength heading into professional baseball. Larnach’s biggest deficiency is his lack of speed that will most likely force him into a corner outfield spot, where his strong arm plays better.

Jake McCarthy, OF, Virginia

McCarthy is a defensive-minded outfielder that has continuously improved at the plate during his three years at UVA. McCarthy went down in March with a wrist injury, but his upside is not expected to change his draft status. McCarthy has hit .337 for his career in college, and performed well in summer wood-bat leagues.

The first round of the draft begins at 4 p.m., with the Detroit Tigers holding the first pick.
