The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Wednesday they have reinstated catcher Jeff Mathis from the paternity leave list and have optioned pitcher Braden Shipley to Triple-A Reno.

Mathis, a defensive specialist, comes back to join his usual pitching partner Zack Greinke on the mound. Mathis’ 3.17 catchers ERA is ranked fifth in the National League among catchers who have caught at least 165 innings.

The 35-year-old Mathis is hitting .190 this year with zero home runs and four RBI.

Shipley, 26, pitched well in relief work after being called up on Monday, not allowing a baserunner in two outings over 3.0 innings and recording one strikeout.

He has struggled in Reno, where Shipley owns a 6.48 ERA through 11 appearances.
