PHOENIX SUNS

ESPN insider: Kendall Marshall to Suns

With Steve Nash’s future in Phoenix anybody’s guess, the Suns are on the hunt for their next star point guard.

They could find him in this year’s NBA Draft.

ESPN.com Senior Writer Andy Katz joined Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo to discuss who the Suns could take with their 13th overall pick. Katz, fresh off the plane from the 2012 NBA Draft Combine, reports the buzz at the workout was whether the Suns promised to draft Dion Waiters of Syracuse.

But whether or not Phoenix did promise the 6-foot-4 shooting guard a spot on their team is irrelevant according to Katz.

“Promises just assure that the team has told [the player’s] agent that if he slips to that pick, the team will take him,” explained Katz. “Even if [the Suns] made a promise, it wouldn’t matter because I don’t think Waiters will be there at 13.”

Katz also feels Weber State point guard Damian Lillard, who was recently pegged as being a fitting piece to the Suns puzzle, will be off the board by the time Phoenix has it’s first round selection.

“That’s sort of the way things are shaping up now,” Katz said. “They (Lillard and Waiters) are the top two playmakers and then behind them are Austin Rivers and Kendall Marshall in some order.”

Rivers has also been linked to the Suns in many mock drafts. The Duke University shooting guard and son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers has, according to Gambo, the highest star potential of the aforementioned players, but Katz believes there isn’t enough on Rivers to make a solid decision.
