Braden Shipley has been recalled by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while Jake Barrett was optioned back to the Triple-A Reno Aces in a corresponding move.
Shipley has been pitching exclusively out of the bullpen for the Aces since May 22.
Shipley has made two appearances this season with the D-backs, both against the Pirates earlier this month. In three innings of work, he has one strikeout and one hit batsman. He has not given up a walk or a hit in nine batters faced.
Despite his success in the majors this season, in Reno, Shipley has posted a 3-4 record with one save and a 6.40 ERA in 13 games.
The D-backs are trying to transition Shipley to the bullpen. He started 14 games for the D-backs over the 2016 and 2017 season.
Originally, the D-backs brought up Barrett to bolster the bullpen for the 18-game stretch the team faces without an off day. So far, the D-backs have started 3-0 during that stretch.
Barrett made two appearances, getting one out to close the game Thursday and then allowing a run on two hits Saturday. Both were against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After wrapping up a four-game series with the Pirates on Sunday, the D-backs will head to Miami for another four-game set before returning home for the final 10 games of the 18-game stretch without an off day.
