Cardinals general manager Steve Keim is awaiting word from the NFL on a potential punishment stemming from a DUI citation on July 4.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the punishment for an executive is not as predictable as it is for players because the players punishments are collectively bargained between the NFL and the players union.

There is a slim chance, according to Florio, that Keim may not be punished at all.

In similar circumstances, assistant coaches who were cited for DUI were not punished by the NFL, including George Edwards of the Minnesota Vikings and Darren Perry of the Green Bay Packers.

On the other hand, the NFL punished Denver Broncos executive Tom Heckert in 2013 and Detroit Lions CEO Tom Lewand in 2010 for 30 days apiece for their DUI incidents. Lewand’s suspension was reduced to 21 days but he was also fined $100,000.

The precedent set by the NFL gives little clarity on the predictability of a punishment for Keim. Even if Keim were to be suspended, most of his day-to-day work, particularly in scouting players, would be minimally affected anyway.
