The Arizona Diamondbacks designated infielder Deven Marrero for assignment after Monday’s win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Marrero, 27, has not played since June 27 due to a left oblique injury. Before arriving with the team on Monday, Marrero had played in two games for Triple-A Reno over the weekend. Marrero is hitting .167 with zero home runs and seven RBI this season.

The utility infielder has made 21 starts and 33 total appearances at third base this season, along with five additional games played at second base. In the past, Marrero has also played first base and shortstop for the Boston Red Sox.

Third baseman Eduardo Escobar and relievers Jake Diekman and Brad Ziegler were acquired before the trade deadline, leaving the D-backs with roster decisions to make. Prior to Marrero being designated for assignment, the team had done the same to relief pitcher Jorge De La Rosa and optioned Chris Owings to Triple-A Reno. Outfielder Jarrod Dyson is also due to come back from the disabled list.

Arizona acquired Marrero in a late March trade with the Boston Red Sox to play behind Jake Lamb and give manager Torey Lovullo an option against left-handed pitching. In the deal, Arizona sent minor-league pitcher Josh Taylor to Boston. In Double-A this season with the Portland Sea Dogs, Taylor has a 4.26 ERA over 25.1 innings.

This season, Marrero has hit .204 facing southpaws and .083 against right-handed arms.

With Marrero designated for assignment, the D-backs’ 40-man roster now has one opening.
