Although the 2018 season is kicking into high gear with division races, wild card races and pennant chases around the corner, it’s not too soon to think about next year.
Bleacher Report released predictions of where pending free agents will sign next season, and the outlook does not look good for the Diamondbacks.
According to the report, the D-backs could lose not only Patrick Corbin and A.J. Pollock, but also newcomer third baseman Eduardo Escobar, who was acquired at the trade deadline.
While Corbin was projected to sign with the Los Angeles Angels, Pollock and Escobar were projected to head off to division rivals the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies, respectively.
The D-backs big splash in free agency was expected to be Brian Dozier, the former Minnesota Twins second baseman who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the deadline.
The D-backs will probably be in the market for guys like that, and Dozier would fit them well. He’d give them power at second base and free up Ketel Marte to serve in a super-utility role.
For now, the D-backs will worry about the 2018 season. Tied for the division lead in the NL West and only one game behind the Atlanta Braves for the second wild card position, the D-backs have more pressing, immediate concerns than worrying about next year.
