Senior linebacker Jay Jay Wilson was suspended from the team indefinitely, ASU head coach Herm Edwards confirmed Saturday.

“(It’s) a team-related situation, he’s been removed from activities until I decide to bring him back,” Edwards said.

He did not elaborate further.

Wilson was not at practice.

After playing offense for the first two years of his collegiate career, Wilson transitioned from tight end to linebacker in 2017 to replace the injured Koron Crump.

It was a return to Wilson’s high school days, when Scout.com listed him as the No. 33 outside linebacker recruit in the nation.

While the defense as a whole struggled last season, Wilson had some big games, including his first start, where he returned an interception for a touchdown, and at the Sun Bowl, where he recorded 12 tackles.

After losing experienced linebackers such as DJ Calhoun and Christian Sam this offseason, it appeared Wilson would take on a larger role this season.

It’s unclear when he will return to the team.
